A Team from Birchington Kent is taking part in a rugged 4x4 challenge that aims to raise more than £100,000 for the military charity Help for Heroes.

Team Cobra from Birchington has entered the only Mercedes G Wagen in the Help for Heroes 4x4 European Rally 2010, which will take them across 1,650 miles of central Europe, following the path of the Allied Invasion after D Day, June 1944.

In addition to the Normandy battlefields, the rally will visit the Rhine offensive at Arnhem, the scene of the largest airborne operation ever, Baston in Belgium, where, in the coldest winter for decades the Germans launched their final push the Battle of the Bulge, the Maginot Line fortifications and the horrors of Dachau, before ending at Hitler's "impenetrable" Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. It will cross six countries in ten days and has attracted a capacity 45 teams from across the UK.

The event, which is restricted to four wheel drive vehicles and will take place this June, has been organised by Keith Bowen from Camberley in Surrey and his son Tim. The pair have regularly competed in 4X4 rallies and after completing one last year across Europe, decided to organise their own, tapping into the popularity of The Band of Brothers television programme.
