rear headrests stuck!

Hi there - I lifted the rear headrests in my 2008 G320CDI up as far as they go - so they stick up on stainless steel stalks a few inches above the back of the rear seats.  Trouble is - I can't get them to go back down so they sit flat on the rear seat backs!!   They are not electric.

Anyone know how - the manual doesn't tell me and there is nothing to "click and hold" - do I use brute force, and if so does the seat need to be in the upright or tipped position?  As they are, I can't put the seats down flat.. (and they look a bit silly!)
