Hi everyone,

I'm continuing my OEM+ restoration of my 1998 German-spec G500 SWB and I'm now looking at improving the lighting.

(Attach the photo.)

My goal isn't to make it look like a modern G63 or an aftermarket build—I'd simply like significantly better night-time visibility while keeping the truck looking as though Mercedes could have built it that way.

At the moment I'm considering something along the lines of the 2013-style front end with projector headlights and integrated DRLs, but I'm unsure what the best route is.

I'd really appreciate advice from members who have already gone down this path.

Some questions I have:

  • If you were doing it again, which headlights would you buy?
  • Genuine Mercedes, Hella, Depo or another manufacturer?
  • How do the aftermarket units compare with genuine Mercedes in terms of fit, light output and long-term reliability?
  • Were any wiring modifications or adapters required on an earlier W463?
  • Are there any brands or suppliers you'd recommend—or avoid?
  • If your budget allowed, would you still choose the 2013-style headlights, or would you retrofit projectors into the original housings instead?

Ultimately, I'm looking for the best balance of:

  • OEM appearance
  • Excellent light output
  • Long-term reliability
  • Straightforward installation

I'd love to hear what has worked well for other owners before I start buying parts.

Many thanks,

Nelson
