Yes the GWOA website ticks along, but increasingly it seems to get diverted to a phishing/domain site.  The hosting company says it could be in our website scripts, but that doesn't explain why it works sometimes and not others.

Keep trying and it seems to clear. In any case, the site will be replaced asap.  I know we have been saying/promising this, but the main issue has been preserving access to the Forum threads.  Not for messages like this one, but the ones where someone shares the experience of how to fettle or fix something in the land of G.

Happy 2025

Re: GWOA Website issues...

It is 2025

A Happy New Year to anyone that can see this...!

I am going to be open and honest

I log on here most days.. as I do many other G related forums and resources

I say log on... well I try as described in the above post

I always get in, eventlually if I percivere long enough..either on lapttop or more often my phone

The site is dead...it has been for years... which is I agree is a great shame

I was once an avid reader and poster on here...  I still try to log on and help where I can as often as I can

I understand the historical resource... a valued resource... but as I say the site, due to its current state is done

Would it not be better to grasp this, cut your losses and move on?

With no current contributions of any meaning and an archaic set up, will this ever change?

Would it not be better to start again with a modern cutting edge set up and re build? Would not the proverbial Pheonix rise from the ashes?

There is room out there for many G resources, each offering a different take or slant on help and advice...

The GWOA was one of the first, was trailblazing and was very good..... WAS is the key word surely... do we not court ending up like Woolworths... fixed in time and holding out for a reality that doesn't exist...whilst the likes of Amazon with progressive ideals move in and take over.. bringing about thier own demise thru inability to adapt, change or reinvent? We may not like the future... but the clue is in the word.. it is coming whether we like it or not!

The site hasn't been current and therefore usable for 10 years or more, I understand the reasons, circumstances and best endeavours of those previously and currently involved... and respect that. I met, knew and valued those original people and also fully appreciated the hard work, time, effort and funds it takes to make a current, relevant forum in todays fast paced, social media age...  but also grasp that the social media... Facebook. Insta et al is not for everyone.. not least the 40+ average Joe (or Josaphine) original G owner!

Perhaps simply and succinctly, it is time to cut loose and move on?

Just my two penn'orth and my own honest personal view point

Onwards and upwards whilst there is still some interest?

2025 New Year... New start?

Sincerly

Gav

Re: GWOA Website issues...

There you go... took me an hour to get that posted after crashing out and coming up to the phising / domain site and then when I goit back in, it had posted three times!

Point that didn't need proving...proved?

Re: GWOA Website issues...

Thanks Gav,

You certainly have supported and helped GWOA for many years.  We are saying the same thing - in that the platform/website is knackered and has been for a while.  Now it is has become untenable and not serving anyone, visitor or member.  So the 'phoenix' website will need to rise soon, with or without access to the 'old' forum.

I am thinking that a surrogate access to the old forum will have to suffice.  For the times where folk want the benefit of past experience, captured in historic threads, they can ask away and admins/tech will do the legwork by accessing the old material.  In fact this will be more efficient because when you are experienced at searching the data, you can locate the gems amongst the rocks much quicker.

The new site will also need to cater for new G.  Not everyone in the G community are rolling their sleeves up and getting out their tool kits.  Increasingly, the information needed is for how to access a feature in the electronics, or how to reset/retrain something, as well as just wanting to know options and opinions for add-ons, improvements, and suppliers.

Also as you stated, there are many places on the inter-web for such information. GWOA is just the old timer (original) in the space and needs to evolve.

Watch this space! (if you can access it)

Update 20th Jan 2025

GWOA website has been unuseable for a couple of weeks of more, after getting slowly worse.  The hosting company said it was a PHP script causing the re-directs - and hopefully they recovered a previous version of the site because today it seems to be working like it should.  Not stunningly fast (especially when creating new posts) but working.

Watch this space - possible new Forum/site identified.

Re: GWOA Website issues...

As Gav has pointed the renewal of the website has been discussed many times over the years and I think we all agree a more modern and reliable website is definitely needed.  I have to take much of the reponsibility for the delay in doing this because I have always been oposed to doing anything that would lose the 20 plus years of forum contributions relating to the repair and maintenace of the 460 and 463 G models. We are one of the oldest G Wagon websites and have a huge and probably unique archive of  information from owners, enthusiasts and experts on all things G  Wagon.

My hope was that we could create a new website fit for purpose but with the ability to retain the archive from this site in a searchable form as a great reference aid to current and future G Wagon owners. This has unfortunately  proved a very difficult thing to achieve with the limited resources we have available.

It may be that there is nothing else to do but modernise and move on but I still hold out some hope that we can take the  archive with us in one form or another, its what makes the GWOA unique.

Re: GWOA Website issues...

As John says, pretty much since I posted that I have not been able to access the site at all, the odd time I got to the landing page it then redirected me... until I gave up..

Big Block I hear everything you say there.. apart from the apportioning blame bit... it's no ones fault, rather just circumstance and how the world moves on...

My fear was not so much the resource which I agree is valuable, but more the fact that shortly there will be nobody left trying to access it if they cant either get in or when they do nothing is happening for weeks at a time...

I actually refer back to the resource a fair bit, often when I am researching (or did) and only reasonbly recently sat and looked thru every G Wizz magazine!

I often get information from the posts from the 00's before I joined, often about what were then new vehicles that are now desirable classics in their own right!

Starting anything from scratch is hard work for all involved

Rebooting something with a jump pack whilst there are still some signs of life may hopefully prove just that little bit easier...

Good luck in whatever you all decided to try

Gav
