Apologies if this has been covered but I couldn't find anything. So here goes: From time to time I see an ad for ex military G240Ds. You can pick them up for about £15k with weather gear fitted. Anyone have any experience of these or thoughts regarding purchasing one? Thanks in advance.

I know of a couple and they seem pretty happy.  The spec can be a bit weird, but the key components are the same.  They have less rust (and less rust proof) and may have been bent.  Once brought up to spec they look very jeep-like, which is OK.

Hi. I have one of these machines. Currently getting a new hood and seats reupholstered. It's a lot of fun if you manage to find the right mechanic. No heating or windows on the doors which can be challenging in UK climate. Otherwise it's good and parts are available for most of the crucial bits.

Thanks - we're near the sea in Cornwall and one of those would be great to take family to the beach, pootle around the lanes etc. but I think it's strictly a summer car, so would not cover all the bases, eg tip runs, dogs, bike shifter etc etc

Just my two penn'orth... It very much could be an all year rounder, if it has a heater. If the heater is working you could probably cook a three course meal with the hot blast. Kernow salt air would do it no favours, though. It would be worth taking preventive measures on a regular basis - either you'd D.I.Y. or you'd hand it to someone you trust to squirt magic anti-rust juice into and onto it. Presumably you would be able to keep it under cover? These vehicles are worth cherishing.

Re: Ex singapore military G240D
Good points and good advice re rust. But it doesn't even have doors, just half height canvas panels. I have visions of me + kids togged up like those guys you used to see on the motorway delivering lorry chassis' in all weathers! But tbh I'm just hoping someone will talk me into it. Otherwise, for my budget, it's going to be an overpriced old landy or a rust bucket Japanese SUV. I had a Patrol for a while and loved it but the chassis rust was unstoppable. I see why the Aussies love them.

Yep.. anyway, you can actually buy real steel (steal) doors from a German supplier, only €3k each. Bargain.

Hi,

Been quite some time since a) I owned a G and b) Posted on GWOA. Now that I've one of these on order, I feel I am suitably qualified to comment once again!. LWB G290 Pick-up due to land in UK at end of June. Full doors though, but canvas top.

I'll post a re-introduction with pictures when I finally get my hands on it with a UK logbook and MOT.

Take care

Woohoo - brilliant.  Good luck.

When you get it please share how you found it and arranged the purchase - via a UK agent or direct with Singapore?

They will roll forever.
