Hi everyone, have just bought my first G so thought I'd better say hello.

This one might be familiar to some of you, there are two GWOA stickers on the front screen, one of which carries the membership number 957 and an expiry date of April 2003.

The car is a 1982 280 LWB Auto, registration number ORL 129X, in white. Odometer reading 131138. General condition ok with minor rot in usual places.

Car is taxed until Feb and tested until September, so can run it for a while, sort out the bits, do some more eBay buying (manuals and handbooks) and will get onto sorting body out when salt season has passed and my best mate who makes WRC cars for a living has some time to help me with body work. Repair panels and a repaint.

Cheers All!

Welcome to this forum.

Don't buy the manuals off Ebay. Join the GWOA for £ 25 p.a. and you can buy a CD-rom containing all the W460 for £ 15. And we won't charge you for listening to those Irishman stories.

Cheers

Welcome JohnD to this Forum. Your story I'd say is a familiar one for people buying 'Old Gs'. I have several and have experienced exactly what you have except I have no expertise in 'doing the work' myself. My poor mechanic gets all my problems. I sing the praises of the G and then he tries to have the car reflect my expectations.

The reason I purchased my 1st G back many moons ago is because having just seen the G in The States I was impressed with her look. When my friendly local Garage came up with one, by accident as I was looking for something like a Mitsubishi Station Wagon, I jumped at the opportunity. Yes it needed work and as my wife was driving my young children around I wanted something really safe. Upon driving the G on a short journey I realised that this was the car for me and the children.

Your G will keep little Orla safe and sound for many years. Look after both Orlas well. Good Luck.

Slan,

Thanks

Just to say thanks guys, appreciate the messages.

Jesús, am in about 5 different clubs at the minute but am rationalising so will sign up soon. CD-rom manual sounds great and a bargain.

Tom, hear what you are saying about the G and couldn't agree more. My other half loves the wagen but her Scenic DTi does 50 to the gallon so I'm guessing they will stay in that! Anyway, we will all have some fun in the G and that's the main thing.

Slán agus beannacht libh,

John G

Enjoyed your intro. and good luck with the restoration. If you search this site you will find a link to a site where you can purchase repair panels for the rear. Don't know what sort of quality but they are around 20 euros ea. or about 50 pounds for genuine MB.

It's on my to do list (along with a couple of hundred more important things, according to my wife anyway). Have booked myself on a welding course first though! Previous attempts have been OK as long as its out of site and covered with 10mm of underseal.

BTW like Lynndie.

Hi,

It's Coenraad's wife. We also bough our G on e-bay, didn't look at her before we bought it. Boy oh boy did we have fun on our first night driving her to London. Just as we hit the motorway the whole car started vibrating and the next moment the back wheel passed the car. We've spent 2 hours in the dark trying to find the missing wheel, but managed to get her home safe. Well she survived driving on only three wheels for about 200 meters - that says a lot!

Our seller promised us that she had rust, but no holes. Not true - it looks as though we chased by gunmen. The blower also didn't work, which he said did.

But believe once you are over the "shock" you will want to hit anyone who has a rude remark about your G.

We replaced the blower, wiper spindles, all the little light bulb inside the dash (yes we've taken apart the dash twice already). Apart from that we top her up with oil once in a while and she has already seen Scotland and France without giving a day's trouble.

Next year we are getting the "bullet holes" fixed as part of preparing her to drive through Africa in about two years time.

Thanks again

Hi Russ and Yolandi - thanks for your messages.

Russ, Glad you liked Lindy, we love her. We keep her on a farm and I have to say I miss the old girl when I don't see her for a while. Working on plans for a new garage at home now, so hopefully will be able to get everything back here sometime in 2005. Have read a lot of your posts on the site btw and learned quite a bit from your experiences, good for you and keep up the top work.

Yolandi - as eBay buys go that drive home certainly sounds interesting! Have done a lot on eBay and love it (even if things do not always turn out perfect). I am still pretty pleased with my purchase. Looking forward to reading more about the Africa preparations and eventual trip, will be time for Paris-Dakar (or should that be Barcelona-Dakar) in a few weeks and the nightly Eurosport round-ups are my favourite bit of TV throughout the year (well, that and the F1 and Bike GP's). Driving Africa looks great and big respect to anyone with the cojones to take it on, at least you have the right vehicle for the job.

Must start posting in the other sections now, about to start work on sorting this wagen out and need a few questions answering!

Cheers all,

John G

John,

For the sake of accuracy "cajones" means drawers (i.e. like in a "chest of drawers").

I guess what you meant is COJONES.

Yours

"con un par de cojones"

Drawers?

Si Jesús, COJONES!

That's exactly what I meant - brilliant. Another one to add to the Word dictionary. :D

More PIcs

Saturday was our first trip out in it. Got some fuel and some fresh air & took some more pics - it got a little muddier later on  though downside was found front locker not engaging...perhaps a trip to Mr. Moss is in order...

Finally, here you can see the wear on the driver's seat and the reason for the forthcoming wear on the passenger's seat...

Lovely pictures. Look after your G and anything to do to her, let us all know. Safe driving and look after the 'little ones' !

Thanks Tom - will do.

Look out for my new site coming up at www.mygwagen.co.uk where I will be blogging the G's progress and setting up links pages and photo albums and all that jazz! Initial version should be up tonight I think.
