Steering damper
I just replaced my steering Damper . Marty Got it for me from merc in belfast for £68 including vat . =€80
Thought to myself lets call a Merc dealer to see how much I saved myself and while I have them on the line to ask how much to install etc .
€110 =£93 part
€125 = £106 labour to loosen 2 nuts and replace. :shock:
I am a moran when it comes to anything mechanical but even I could loosen those nuts as I did it myself .
????One quick question the bit where the bolt goes through in the damper and then tightens with the nut one side must be the bottom and one the top as its a little more raised on the outside . I wasnt paying attention when I took it off as i couldnt see that untill the nut was off ??. Please advise top and bottom ( bottom being facing the ground and top facing up)

Fit the bolt at the top, with the nut mounted at the bottom. Technicallly, it does not matter, but with safety in mind, should the nut undo, obviously it will fall away but the bolt head willl prevent the bolt from falling through.
This does not mean the bolt will not eventually raise its self out of the hole, left unchecked, and fall off, but given, the nut may fall off first gives more of the chance for the bolt to remain attached.

Definately worth replacing every now and then given how easy the job is. Having a decent damper must put less strain on the other elements such as track rod ends etc. I think I paid about that from Merc in Taunton, can't believe their charging £106 for labour. That must equate to a 2 hour job. It takes 30 minutes tops including getting the tools out and putting them away again I reckon!
From memory I think there are at least 2, if not 3 different dampers, each a different diameter and different price, the one standard on the G55 being thickest/most expensive.

It only took no more than 5 minutes . I wish that I was just more clued up on mechanics and then could do more stuff my self. its great satisfaction .
I was also allowing for tea breaks! :D

Say I fitted it correct the nut and bolt the way you say and the thick big part of the damper on the left passenger side The hole that the damper has for the bolt to go through and tighten . On the damper one exit side is more raised on the outside then the other almost as if when the bolt is tightend it should fit into the body or nut that will be grooved inwards to take this raised side of the cylinder. The thick bit and thin bit left and right both have this . I have look to see if there is wear on the nut or top bit of the body for this to fit in but no luck Doesnt make sence why merc made it like this .
