Hi All,

Not sure how to start this - technically still an ML owner, but that will all change come the third of November when I go and collect my 'new' car. The item in question is a G500 I am getting from the G Wagen center in Reading.

Both my wife and I have finally taken the plunge and decided that after three ML’s (2 ML55 AMG’s and a 2.70CDI- current) we would go for a G Wagen :D . Disappointed that they stopped making right hand drives (unless you want to spend 120K on a new AMG! :( )

Have been looking for a mint one from an official source and finally came to decide on the G500. The kids love it, the wife loves it and I can’t wait to get it! I would be interested in hearing any comments from owners who have used it as a main family car and what their experiences have been like living with it from day to day. All advice will be read and digested.

I would like to also ask should I carry on getting my MB garage to service it (they have been servicing all my cars for the past 10 years and have offered to carry on – the man in charge said he used to race G’ a few years back and understands them) and should I keep my insurance with MB or is it advisable to find a specialist who would understand what a G is? (My call was received with ‘I’ll have to pass you to my supervisor’

Apologies for rambling, but I have been reading some of the comments/posts and see that you are a very dedicated and loyal group, and almost know every G Wagen that is out there. I would like to assure you that it is going to a good home and will be treated as a member of the family – My daughters are arguing what they will be calling it – will post the name and photo when it is on the drive.

Re: New Addition

hus55,

Thanks for the reply, sure; I have got it from G Wagen, in Mapledurham nr Reading. It’s a 2001 on a Y (Y282 LCF) plate and it’s a G500 V8 LWB in Tektyte Grey. I have been assured it was one of the last RHD that came off the production line, with the exception of the 50 AMG variant they did in ’05.

Could not see any indication of rust (having crawled under to take a look), and all electrics work very well. I spoke with a Jeff at the G Centre in Malvern who helped advise me what and where to look – so if he is reading this many thanks! There is some slight bubbling on the paint work by the wing mirrors, however G Wagen will sort that out before delivery, and I found the gear stick a tad short, and again he has assured me he will get a slightly longer stalk and replace it before I take delivery.

Would be interesting in knowing how old your G320 CDI is, as the G Wagen place I am buying from had some fantastic CDI's but all LHD - the Spec's being more updated (COMMAND, central consol etc).

FYI - When I called Mercedes in Germany they said the only RHD would be done by AMG, although for an extra £28K they would convert from LHD to RHD any G Wagen I wanted - not in my price bracket just yet! :) and also they were planning to put the 4.2 V8 Diesel engine, but this would be a LHD variant for the US market

Re: New Addition

Great looking G, and yes, it must be one of the last RHD, and there are many who prefer the older pre command dash, but thats really because we haven't got a newer G   .

Great news there considering putting the new version of the 4 litre CDI in, hope they don't send them all to the US.

The G320 CDI is the latest model, hardly been out a year, and replaced the G270 & G400 CDI's

Have i got this right, there gonna build a 1 off RHD G, just incase you want it?

No doubt you can get a RHD one but from AMG, not much change back from about £80000.00.

Re: New Addition

Welcome to the club indeed! The only thing I think you might want to add to the G500 is the AMG twin-exit exhausts to hear the engine a bit better; it sounds amazing.
The rust under the mirrors is very common, and started only when they began painting that bit in the body colour; they don't seem to have gotten the process right to this day (evidenced by 2003+ mirrors with rust on ebay). The good news is it is a different part to the door so no chance of the rust spreading, and a new mirror is hardly worth the hassle (~300?).

Re: New Addition

Mark,

When I started looking at the G Wagen, I called Mercedes sales and Marketing in Stuttgart about 3 months ago, who put me in contact with a very helpful bloke who basically said ‘Due to the increase of sales in the US, it was decided to concentrate on building the LHD models, it was however, investigated about 18 months ago to see if they would do another run of RHD, however they would have to close down the existing line, re tool for RHD and then do the run, close it back down and re tool for LHD and start it again’.

‘However if I did want a RHD, I could get a conversion done of a LHD (it would be done by AMG as they have the tools as they hand build most of their cars to order) to RHD, but it would be the cost of the LHD+ about 40K Euro’ –which put it way out of my budget. He did mention that there have been some non AMG conversions done by AMG in Affalterbach (Main AMG HQ), but he thought that they went to Japan, Australia and South Africa and he was not sure but maybe 2/3 went to the UK for ‘testing’, which fits in to some rumors I heard that the British Army were looking at the G.

Sorry that’s all I have, except that 50 AMG’s came over to the UK in 2005 (RHD)

Re: New Addition

hu55,

Ask your brother if the seats in the third row are electrically folding and if the suspension is Airmatic - if so he talking about the GL320 CDI - a good car - but many problems - Mercedes can not shift them due to the 'eco fad of hating 4x4's' that is undergoing the UK at the moment.

Re: New Addition

i have cross examined my brother a 100 times, believe me!!

we had our first G 24 YEARS AGO and he knows the difference between GL and G.

I too am in disbelief about a rhd G320cdi but they are mercedes importers with a portfolio of cls's, new s class,c class,e class,gl class,a class,b class slk but never a G class!!

so i says to him," mehmet...bruv,are you sure its a rhd?? they do not exist etc etc.....

he said to me " yes it f*** well is!!"

well,i am not gonna argue anymore but wait for the vin no.

Re: New Addition

Well the great day has arrived – I am the proud new owner of a 2001 G500 V8 MONSTER (463).

My God what a car – big, brutish and mean looking - just going shopping (Waitrose Car Park) I had 4 people come up and remark on it (all good I hasten to add). One or two small niggles that will test the G-Wagen Centre (the dealer formally known as Ballooner) and I will report that in the appropriate section. I will also post some pictures once I have done two things, Changed the plate – Current Y828 LCF to V8 GWO (you guessed it G-Wagen Owner!) and addressed the ‘niggles’.

First impressions is that I and the family are sooooo happy, the kids love it (it has the addition of an entertainment system in), my wife loves it as they keep quite in the back and she loves the ‘wide screen landscape’ front window and me, well nice to have that V8 rumble under my right boot and something different, really different.

As I said I look forward to posting some photo’s soon.

It's not a DVD.... its a PS2 and its under the larger of the rear seats.

Spider - did you ever check if it infringed on the storage space?

Re: New Addition

Thanks Max.

The screens are 5.6 x 5.8 TFT LCD., the system is linked over the current ICE system by tuning into an existing radio frequency. The main junction box and PS2 are located in the cubby hole under the 60 of the 60/40 split seats. Not much space left! The CD multi stack is under the passenger front seat. The quality is very good for a 3rd party ICE system and very neatly installed, although there is a slight background buzz when a DVD is being played and the head rests will need a slight tightening. This is due to be sorted out soon – but it is more than acceptable! There is a gap which allows the CD tray to open and close under the back seats and a main power switch to switch it on and off. There is also a front LCD 7x5 screen that attaches to the dash board and I believe it pick up the sat nav from the MB ICE system – but yet to check this as I am happy with the little display on the speedo computer.

The play station is just brilliant! Wife hates it as she has to drive – but as I am the only one who can win against my daughter……… (that’s my excuse and I am sticking to it! 8) )

We've got a DVD and Slimline PS2 setup in the Lexus.......and I just can't remember the last time I heard "are we there yet?". ?if it interests you, and you have more than one rear seat passenger, you may be able to add a DVD to the system, and then have either a plug-in dual port headphone point, or alternatively wireless headphones with switchable frequencies.....
If it gives you brownie points, you can probably include the front screen in the system therefore dealing with any passenger wife issues, meanwhile you get to experience that v8 burble !!!!!

Will agree with your comments on "are we there yet"!! :P :P

If I added any more stuff I would get a big 'hurump' from the Mrs! :? The playstaion is 'Quite enough!' (her words not mine!). The front screen is intergrated and can do either sat nav or the DVD playing on the PS2, so she sits back and watches 'Thomas the bloody tank engine go up the hill - AGAIN and Thomas the Bloody tank engine going donw the hill - AGAIN'

Me, I am usually found at arorund 5-6K revs just listening to that V8 roar or with the window down at traffic lights, listening to it burble - ahhhh bliss what more can a bloke want? Quite wife and kids and a V8 G......... Surley the best a man can get!? 8)

Thats what I've got - happy with them. Quiet on road and still decent off-road though I have yet to take them anywhere beyond green lanes.
