loud wind noise at speed from new roof aerial 2008 G320CDI
I had the stub aerial at the front of the roof in the middle replaced, as well as the unit that controls the interior lights which is underneath that, a few years ago, as the aerial seal had failed so it was noisy and also letting in water, so the interior lighting controls had stopped working properly
The aerial is still noisy. At somewhere between 60-70mph depending on wind speed and direction it cuts in - sudden and loud - I suppose it vibrates like a reed in a musical instrument although not that musical!!
Chap who looks after my Mercedes these days - ex MB tech for many years - thinks aerial looks wrong. It's short and stubby and leans slighly forward if anything - rather than aerodynamically towards back of vehicle
Question is - anyone had this? Any idea how to solve? Really makes the vehicle non functional on motorways!!
Many thanks, Mike
PS. Chassis number is WDB4633411X174886
The part number MB sold me and fitted a few years back. MA210 820 21 75 Antenna
Part number of the Aerial to VIN is correct
Never heard of it before...
Only thing I can offer is on the parts picture is shows a "Protective Cap" that goes over the Aerial
Number is A202 827 00 31 64 at about £12
From my knowledge of how the parts system is laid out there is no indication that it comes with the new Aerial you bought
It looks like a sleeve that goes over the Aerial with ribs on it maybe to break up the wind noise?
Only a guess.....
Item 10 is the Aerial
Item 20 is the Protective Cap
This reminded me. I had similar for a year and posted here about it. Sounded more like it was from a gutter than the aerial tho. I cleaned and wiggled the guttering a bit and then a year later I realise the noise has not come back at any speeds.
So I think even minor change to airflow can resolve it. In your case, rotate the aerial 2 degrees and try that.
Hi Mike
has yours got a sunroof?
If so tilt the rear roof part up when driving at 60/70... if the noise comes down then pretty sure its the sunroof seal giving the windscreen effect noise.
Had mine changed on similar year.
Ps: ariel pointing opposite car is normal thats the later satnav arial from memory should lean like that..
Again look at water channel guides to see if they are blocked
smallest things can make a drumming affect noise.
cheers G
my G350 started to develop similar symptoms, a loud noise which kicked in around 70 mph on longer journeys. The source was difficult to locate, sometimes it appeared to come from the bonnet, sometimes from the top, the vibrations were most pronounced at the top as described in this thread. The cause was a de-bonded rubber seal at the top of the windscreen, all that was required was applying black sealant. Did the 10 minute high speed test yesterday, problem has been solved.
in this context we looked at the gutter as well, reglued the item shown on the picture, but the issue seems to have been the windscreen.
Just to add.. the previous aerial (can't recall exactly what it looked like) didn't make the sort of noise the current one does. It was a forced air noise, building from a whisper
The current aerial noise is a loud shriek. Unless wearing ear defenders you really wouldn't carry on at the speed that causes the noise to be made. It forces you to slow down to the speed the lorries are going!
