Anybody here had positive / negative experience with chiptuning such an engine.
Power is adequate for me, but I wouldn't mind a little extra if it doesn't harm reliability.
I did it to my LR TD5 engine and it ran smoother, more economical and with noticabily more power.
Or is chiptuning a big No No!
thx

Re: chip tuning 290 turbo diesel

 Hi G,

I had a look into this over the summer (was looking for a 290 GTD myself, couldn't find what I wanted and ended up going for a base-spec, low mileage, 300 TD instead). Chipping is not a problem with this engine and you should be able to easily get the power up to 135PS and bit more torque (i.e. getting very similar numbers to the usual TD5 chips that are available). Sorry but I can't remember who the company was that supplied the base-chip. Hope someone else can help you out on that here.

Regards/Ph

Re: chip tuning 290 turbo diesel

I "tink" I have a paper copy somewhere at home
however I also "tink" www.upsolute.com was my preferred source for tuning the 290.
Upsolute no longer list this model.
loads more out there though, though a local guru did warn against some "plug & play" so called "systems" that he said were nothing but  a dressed up resistor which simply increased fuelling. and cost £400/£500 odd.
If I also recall correctly i was aiming for about 150 HP with a commensurate torque increase

Re: chip tuning 290 turbo diesel

I had nothing but praise for how my TD5 engin went after a ECU remap.
But what I want to know is this. Will my engine still be reliable or will it fail in the middle of nowhere?

@ Phileas, I still have a tool here for you, but I lost all your data due to the crash of this website.
You still need it?

Re: chip tuning 290 turbo diesel

Hi all and well come back!!
I also wondering if the chip tuning affects the reliability of the engine. I will stay online as few HP more is welcomed to my car, 125 hp for 2500kgr is not the best rate.
My best regards Angelos

G. Ref tool: Yes, still need it as haven't fitted it yet. I'll pm you with the details.

I agree with you on the TD5s, they really run sweatly on not-too-overly-tuned remaps. I recall, the only issue was that the head gasket would go after about 50k miles, refit another one and go for another 50k. I don't know of any issues with relatively the same tweeks/power-torque upgrades for the 2.9 TD engine. Good luck with it.
