Apple CarPlay for an Early W463 – Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB or something better?
Hi everyone,
I'm continuing the OEM+ restoration of my 1998 G500 SWB and I'm now looking at updating the audio system.
I'd really like to keep the dashboard looking as original as possible, so I'm trying to avoid cutting the dash or converting it to a double-DIN setup.
One unit that has really caught my attention is the Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB with its motorised flip-out screen.
(Attach the Pioneer photos and a photo of your dashboard.)
It seems to offer exactly what I'm after:
- Apple CarPlay / Android Auto
- Modern navigation
- Bluetooth
- Reverse camera capability
- Excellent sound quality
- Yet, when the screen retracts, it still preserves the original appearance of the dashboard.
Before I buy one, I was hoping someone here may already have experience with it—or perhaps another unit.
A few questions:
- Has anyone installed the AVH-Z7200DAB in an early W463?
- Does the screen clear the heater controls and dashboard properly?
- Does it interfere with the gear selector or diff-lock switches?
- Any issues with vibration or reliability over time?
- Would you choose something different today?
If you have another solution, I'd love to hear about it.
My priorities are:
- Keep the original dashboard.
- No cutting or irreversible modifications.
- OEM-looking installation.
- Reliable Apple CarPlay.
- Good sound quality.
- Something that still feels appropriate for a classic G rather than making it look like a modern SUV.
Photos of your installations would be hugely appreciated.
Many thanks,
Nelson
This is exactly what I was going to do, and several others have done, for all the good reasons you have listed.
Remember you still need a mobile phone holder to link that, A windscreen sucker one to the RHS of the steering wheel works well.
In the end I did the following:
I bought a very cheap (£25) DAB Radio with retro buttons/dials that went into the dash in 5 minutes. It has Bluetooth so I could play any audio from my phone through that (spotify, podcasts etc)
Then a mini-android Tablet (8inch I think, maybe 10) which has all the apps you ever need including email and Car Play etc. Touch screen for Google Maps and Waze mainly. It was permanently on display, but for about £100 (I think) noone was going to steal it. Then your phone is just needed for a hotspot and data. I liked that it (the tablet) could be moved around and put away (glove compartment) if you wanted. It did share my 12V USBC phone charging cable.
So like your solution (the better one) but in 2 parts with some portability.

Thanks very much for your reply, that's a really interesting approach and one I hadn't considered.
Would you happen to have a few photos of your setup?
I'm particularly interested in seeing:
If you have any pictures of the installation (tablet in place and with it removed), I'd really appreciate seeing them.
