Can an original W463 spare wheel cover be repaired?
Hi everyone,
I'm gradually refreshing my recently acquired 1998 G500 SWB and one of the items I'd like to save, if possible, is the original Mercedes spare wheel cover.
It has a couple of shallow dents and a number of scratches, but no cracks or broken mounts that I can see.
(Photos attached.)
Before I start looking for a replacement, I wondered if anyone here has successfully repaired one.
A few questions:
- Can these covers normally be repaired by a good body shop?
- Are the dents usually removable?
- Is the plastic prone to cracking during repair?
- Would you repair and repaint it, or simply replace it?
- If anyone has had one restored in the UK, I'd appreciate recommendations.
I'd much rather keep the original part if it's possible to achieve a factory-looking finish.
Many thanks,
Nelson
TThats not too bad at all.
I have recently taken mine off as it is worse with a bit of rust now where the dink is down to the metal.
The dents can easily be hammered out from the inside, then prepped like any body panel to make it super smooth and sprayed. I just haven't dropped mine off yet for that.
