Tip for fcp and others, I have found that if you do not get a blue texting on url addresses, which provide a quick link to the site; press the return key several times with the cursor before the url address and the backspace to place the address line to where you wanted it. This does change the text to blue, providing the quick link.
18K - jeez, even with gaffer tape on bench seats... I do loke the size of the arm rests though (don't have any on mine, but does that mean mine's only worth about 16K?!?)

Silchester Garage is known for their SL Pagoda restorations. I have seen one and to my untrained eye looked for all intense purposes new - underneath it had all new suspension and brakes many parts still with their merc labels on.
But the cost was eye watering £70k++ from memory.
So why start restoring G's at (to them) only £17k and it is not the first I have seen advertised by them.
Can the 460 now be considered as a "classic" and one did sell at auction last month for £17k. At this rate they will be worth more than a 500!
It looks as if Peter P has the correct therory on the 460. Mine is used as intended, offroaded, takes me to work, and tows the horse trailer. Just a bit tatty but no need for gaffer tape on my seats!!

After £1000's spent, this car is almost complete restored now.
Engine and Gearbox rebuild not long ago, must be one of the best in market.

Seen and read it so many times in the past !! we have seen G wagen going up and down on prices for the last 15 years and it's always the same, comments have been soooooo negative for so long. no wonder new members/ G wagen owners are running away from that forum...
Funny how some peoples are slugging off and in the same time trying to sell on that forum at an extremely high asking price !!!!!

No Mr Perfect - Its the fact we have running water that comes out a a thing called a tap. we stopped going to the village well years ago :). We also have indoor loos that flush as well. so all is OK here in the south.
Also is a G not worth what anyone wants to pay? thats why we have the buying advice section, so any new member can look at our 'informative' comments, our 'experianced' advice and then make their decisions. It also allows dealers to take a look and price acordingly.
Though at 18K my personal obeservation on a feeble 300GD for an '86 is a tad on the high side, unless of course they have used gold wiring looms to do the restroation LOL. I have actually been to this garage and the care and attention they do take on their restorations are very high and are of quality. that does generally cost a little more. (but by that much - I am not too sure)

I think it's very encouraging that Silchester have a restored G wagen. They certainly seem to have a good reputation as far as SL's go. It will be very nice to see some more restored 460's.
They are running a business, not a charity.
Perhaps we could have a meeting there, show some interest rather then taking the piss.
comments a bit symptomatic of the forum at mo.....surely all those who already own 460's should be pleased to see how values are rising as more people appreciate the unique qualities of the vehicle...certainly one of the few everyday drivers that is increasing in value.
A well qualified appraiser recently valued Axels 460 lwb 606 /6 speed in the mid 30's
I was also recently dissapointed to lose 2 x '85 swb 617's well rotted but engines ran [all doors rotten ditto sills/floor/spring cups ] at £1000 each..sold for £1500 ea..
In my opinion prices have hardened by 50% in last year

I brought my 460 as a car with character (having had my LR 110 stolen) to fill with kids, bikes, logs, drive across bogs, jump over and generally enjoy including maintenance hopefully till it dies - certainly not as an investment. But yes I am pleased to see price go up - only worried it will make me more precious and instead of encouraging the kids to climb all over will start protecting it and making the sure the doors are locked to prevent theft...
Suspect it highlights the different approaches people have to their G's - utility in my case but if prices go up may have to go with my wifes wishes of selling, getting another LR (with turbo!!!) and using the 'investment' for horse box and horse. See my predicament!!!
the value of any G Wagon is not the asking price it is the selling price which one seldom gets to hear or read about..... try buying one of the New production G's for cash especially pre registered !!! the true value is not what has been spent on it over the years it is ALL in the eye of the beholder and just how deep his/her pockets are...as 460 series G's get bought for breaking ( £800/£1500 on average) "because they are too expensive to repair "they will become scarce and thus more expensive..and now some MB parts are not being supplied any more ..an example being the 3/2 valve P/n A002 997 53 36 which is part of the vacuum distribution system for the gear change on the 460 / OM 617 engine fitted with the automatic G'box using vacuum gearchange management....even the valve manufacturer is reluctant to produce a minimum quantity of 10 units unless at some exorbitant price...the solution is to fit the later cable controlled G'box ... if your G' warrants that expenditure.....how many experienced G' owners will spend £18K on an unfinished project. and how many with no experience will want to commit to what will become a very expensive learning curve...
its worth what some one is prepared pay...when a recent white 461 LWB 290 GTD auto with twin spare wheels was up for £10,000 recently...?

I would advise anyone who is looking for a classic Merc to take a look at Silchester. I have been twice now, once with a former member (Maxwell Smart) and second with my father - as he was looking for a classic Merc as an investment.
And that is why people go there. When I spoke with the bloke there, his issue was most of the time the vehicles they do up, spend more time in hermetically sealed garages. They tend to source as genuine parts as possible, where not they get the parts form MB approved engineering firms. They have one of the best reputations for SL’s restorations. As has been pointed out maybe its a good thing they will start looking at G Wagens, and they know of our site so you never know they could be reading this thread as we type! Knowing their reputation in the Pagoda market, they have clients who would see nothing strange in dropping £20K for a new re-spray and getting genuine seats for their SL’. While there Maxwell and I saw a pile of bits lumped in a SL body from a 1956 waiting for restoration – already (for what I see as scrap) he had paid £10K for it and they had still not started the rebuild!
Maybe this G was a project that a former customer decided against? Maybe they are trading on the fact that recognised as as specialist in SL’s they are expanding their portfolio to G’s? Who knows.

i have known the pagoda experts 'silchesters' for years. they are in the high end of the restorsation market. no one in their right mind can argue with that, [ no even pp ] .
i presently own 2 460's and a 463 and have been following the online sales market for years... the G is a sound investement but an expensive hobby, a very expensive hobby indeed. and the fact that despite the present economic problems in the uk they still seem to hols very high value compared to all other suv's and many top end marque saloons too.
i made a few comments in a funny way, before noticing the seller. sorry.....
BUT, if that G IS worth that sort of money, the photos must justify it !! 17k is alot of dosh for a 460. it has to be tip top, infact even untouched, and original condition which means, 1 owner, garage kept, non smoking ,no pets type of condition with fsh documented at least part mb too.
i would be eager to konw if anyone hase seen this 460 close up .
if ti sells fro that sum , [and i hope it does..] its great news for all us 460 owners .

So on an insurance point of view...given G wagens are still being made...parts are readliy available like wings axles and the like...where as a pagodas are not...if you were to buy this £18k G wagen...and wrote it of the next day in an accident ..what do you think the insurance would pay up...what you paid for it or what it says in the Glasses guide ?....theres the differenc in an investment or not...the G wagen isnt a classic yet...hence why in my view..and the eye of insruances companies..its going to be makret value...which they will compare..given the huge difference in what people think there car is worth...what will the insurance companies pay out ?

Not doing the cabrio for a profitable reason .... time will tell if the car gets back on the road sometime !!! Still have hopes !!

I suppose it depends on how you value your dollar..so my opinion would be...what am I getting for my hard earned cash...where as someone who has lots to spare...might not think twice about buying it...and slagging is to harsh a word for what has been mentioned in these posts...car looks fab..but £18K would you pay that for it ?. I doubt very much if someone had that sort of money to spend on it would be asking us for advice...when, as said, that 461 290gtd was up for 10K, and if the 2 were up for sale at the same time..what advice would we be giving that potential buyer..spend £18K on the 460 or £10K on the 2001 461...and spend £8K on some bling maybe ? Bills got a 463 for £13500 for sale..granted to do a rotten old 300 up to a standard..that we assume. without seeing it, seems cheap, if you was to undertake a task..but it may have been a tidy one in the first place...and needed only a few £1000 spent on it..and for sure the guy has a business to run but the discussion is not about how much the garage is making in profit...but what is considered a reasonable price for this car..given other examples out there.

You are assuming wrong, that 461 never sold for 10K !!!! but not far from twice as that (I believe)!! and has had a hard life in Scotland's fields!!!
On can assume you can buy for 16/17K that 460 that wouldnt be far from a new car !!
I think for someone that wants to buy and drive a classic car completely restored not far from new and knowing that he will get another 10/15 years out of ...it's not a bad buy and I think why not !!!
What classic, original car can you buy on the market today that is drivable on a daily basis and is going to last you another 10 to 20 years for 16K??
My original post was about peoples slagging cars up for sale in here !!! It is too easy to do so without seen the car or knowing in what state the car is !!!!
My advice to a potential buyer would be to consider it if he was very kind but to make sure at that price that he is buying a SPOT ON car !!!! with restoration file, warranty , and all original !!!

Look at how the pagoda has gone up on price in the last few years !!! You could pick one up 7/10 years ago from 15K !!! you couldnt buy any rotten one for that today !!!
I would be surprise if the G that Bill has sold has received a full restoration !!! but he will confirmed that !!! Kind of hard to say if it was expensive or not ... not got much details about the car !!!! Again it is as expensive or over price as you want it to be ....

rare as a diesel auto, probably been round the clock at least once as they only go to 99999, a more realistic and in light of the current market reasonable asking price. Its an exceptionally slow vehicle though but as the bodywork is un-modified the vehicle has kept its dignity
